Living Pulpit

In a time when authentic spirituality is needed, how much can we still keep it up? From a faith that rests on God as a loving Presence, creative Source, and pure wonder, can we translate it to a life transformed and merged into His power?

A faith that sees God without borders, can we still show it? And from there, can it attract others who witness us day by day?

We preach a message every day, everywhere we go. It’s not in an elevated platform or a high reading desk but in our lives. Our actions and decisions speak loud to everything around us, and they become future stories for those who see it.

So here lies the big question: Have we lived our lives according to our purpose?

I’m sure that with the reality of human existence, we’ll be asked these important questions:
      * Am I spending my energy on my time on Earth?
      * Am I giving value to people who matter most?
      * Am I living the way I want to be remembered?

We may start good or bad in life’s race, but I’m certain that we want to finish right. In spite of our mistakes, we want to correct them when we have the chance. And for us who are still alive, how can we still make the most of our time here on Earth?

I’ve listed out a few points I’ve learned that can help us do such, and here are these:

1. Take ahold strongly the God-given life in us.
Our lives have been disrupted by the gospel. By heart, we know that Jesus came to Earth to give us the life we’re meant to live. All for love, He died the death we should have died. And with His resurrection after, He put death to death.

Through the gospel, our lives are infused with meaning. Through the encounter that tugged us, we learn to walk on His ways, and it’s a way of love. We spread an aroma of love not only to God, but also to our families, our friends, our classmates, our workmates, our church, our city, and in our world. If we are in Him, then we follow and be like Him. It’s the life we’re called to.

2. Engage the senses and connect with the world around us.
We know for a fact that we’re agents of His movement. But have we shared others a gospel of love? Because we sometimes focus on being right. They read you and me. And we talk more by our walk. How can they be attracted to us when we are hypocritical, judgmental, apathetic, greedy or selfish?

The world needs healing from its brokenness. And since we were rescued and restored by Him from our brokenness, we ought to give it to them so they can be lead to Him. All that’s needed are a logical mind, a poetic heart, and a mystic spirit. There’s a world out there with a lot of needs. A simple dialogue or apology can turn things around. It’s a matter of interconnection.

3. Work on the God-given gifts purposefully.
I believe that the talents and skills we possess are placed with for a reason. When fully utilized and maximized, they can be used to bring a message of hope and inspiration. Whether it be leading a solution strategy, creating an artistic masterpiece, or teaching a new ability, we do it excellently. It’s our way of making a difference in our relationships and in our city. After all, we’re on a mission. We have a unique part to play in the fulfillment of the mission. And our mission field is as near as our surroundings.

4. Never forget the essence and the power of prayer.
It’s something to always bring all along. And there’s no doubt it’s an effective weapon through the times. It has made wonders on answering financial difficulties, strained relationships and even our nation’s problems. Even our lives are answers to these because of our response to the call.

I can say that it’s not only food for the spirit but also fuel for the soul. Imagine how life would be if it’s taken out of the picture. It’s so powerful to change us all around. And the more we grow in prayer, the more we fully build an inspiring message of life and faith.

This isn’t easy to take I must say. We make a bundle of paradoxes in life. And in our flaws and imperfections, we always try to be at our best. We learn from our mistakes, move forward, and strive to become better each day. It’s something we can take. But what I fear most is taking things in our lives that can kill us in a slow fade. If we lend an ear for an advice and pass it on the other, or hear a correction and place my pride in the frontline, or feed our selfishness and greed at the expense of others, I don’t think we can bring an effective message.

It’s good to look back and check ourselves regularly to see our strengths, weaknesses, and future goals. It’s good to ask questions like:
      * How have we managed our lives with the time we’re given?
      * Have we made the right choices and decisions in life?
      * Have we been careful and wise in living?

It’s good to ensure that our perspectives are still aligned to Him and His Word. We still work our action plans to successful progress. We choose to respond as He would do when life is difficult. Our focus and attention are still on Him. They can assure us we’re on track and we keep on going.

We all have unique journeys. And at the end of the day, we want our lives where our center is worshipping Him, our character is growing with Him, our contribution is our ministry, and our communication is our life message. This is my fervent hope and prayer.
